Denver Dry Garden

Drought tolerant gardening in Colorado

18 lilac bushes.

9 rose bushes, of an unknown variety. They were not looking well.

1 old and very tall Juniper tree, in the middle of a side patio. The previous owner told me it has been here since the bungalow began, in 1925,

18 lilac bushes. In the back and the front. Very leggy, old lilacs. The previous owner grew only vegetables, and roses and lilacs. Perhaps these bushes were comforting to them. They are not awful, they grow into a large space and create privacy.

I had to yank all of the lilacs out. They took up precious yard real estate. They are very water hungry, which I am opposed to, and I had so many other things I wanted to plant in their space. But, getting rid of them was super tricky. These lilacs were huge and old and very well rooted. I was able to pull most of them, but I had to hire my friend Romero’s crew to pull 3 very stubborn lilac bushes that were rooted insanely deeply. It took them over 2 hours to pull each bush, and they had to use a huge truck to extract the last one.

I imagine that if they could speak, they would have some lovely stories to tell. I was sad to disrupt them.

Goodbye old noble beauties, may you rest in lilac peace.
